Matt Tebbutt admits ‘I’m struggling’ as he falters during BBC Saturday Kitchen segment: ‘Been on the wine already!’

BBC Saturday Kitchen’s Matt Tebbutt was left unstuck as he attempted to introduce a segment featuring documentary filmmaker guest Stacey Dooley, 38, to the audience.

The 51-year-old chef and presenter hid his head in his hands after the blunder.

During Saturday’s episode, Tebbutt faultlessly introduced the show and the various guest stars.

In almost one breath, he breezed through: “Now today’s special guest burst onto our screens in 2008 and nearly 17 years later her documentary are still leading the charge for change. On top of that she found time to win Strictly, become a mum and write three books. Welcome back Stacey Dooley!”

However, his hosting performance quickly derailed as he attempted to reintroduce Dooley to the show’s food heaven or food hell segment – where the viewing public vote on what the guest will be cooked, a dish they would love or one they think they would hate.

“Now, as you know, you’ve been here before– food or foo…” Tebbutt attempted to say before stumbling into gibberish as he lost control of the sentence.

The host hid his head in his hands as laughter boomed around the studio.

“Can we do that again?” an increasingly red Tebbutt asked to the crew after reemerging.

“Have you done this before?” wine expert and Saturday Kitchen stalwart Helen McGinn teased, placing a kindly hand on Tebbutt’s arm.

So, Stacey, you’ve done this before… I’m struggling!” the host admitted after a second aborted attempt.

He finally managed: “Food heaven, food hell at the end of the show. What’s setting your world on fire?”

“You’ve been on the wine already!” Dooley shot back with a grin, prompting more raucous laughter.

The 38-year-old eventually explained her heaven would be “Tapas vibes” – which included kapers, anchovies and tomatoes.

For her hell, the broadcaster revealed she was “not in my pork era” so chose any variation of the meat.

To her chagrin, the public chose food hell for Dooley.

Despite her disappointment, the documentary maker enjoyed the pork dish prepared by Tebbutt.

“Very good. Very good crackling, Matt!” she praised.
