Ronnie Archer-Morgan issues stark warning to ‘obsessive’ BBC Antiques Roadshow collector over value of 1,000+ items

BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Ronnie Archer-Morgan issued a stern warning to one guest who brought along her extensive collection of compact powder purses.

Fiona Bruce and the experts were excited to find some of the treasures guests had brought along to Ebrington Square in Derry/Londonderry in the west of Northern Ireland in a classic episode.

The repeat, which airs tonight from 7pm on BBC One, saw Lennox Cato discover a table made from the gifts bestowed by a Chinese emperor.

Grant Ford got to see a painting that was only commissioned after its subject won the top prize in a dog show, and John Sandon was amazed to find a pair of plates that are remarkable survivors from the 18th century.

However, it was Archer-Morgan who was left amazed by a collector who amassed over one thousand stunning compact purses.

Taking a look at the purses which were laid out on the table, Archer-Morgan noted: “Could it be said, that you’re an obsessive collector by any chance?”

No, I don’t think it is obvious,” the guest sarcastically laughed, leaving Archer-Morgan to add: “Not obvious at all.”

Explaining where she had bought the items, the guest explained: “I probably have over 1,000, I’m very cautious. The story is that I was married in 1973, and we had a house but not furniture.

I went to an auction, bought a cardboard box full of things and I fell in love with them and this is the result. These are my babies, and they are quite an assortment.”

Agreeing with the guest, Archer-Morgan continued: “They are, we have a range, a range here. We have got the most beautiful silver enamel, and we have got the whacky triangular…

“This is all about elegance, style, it’s about glamour. I mean these ones here, this one, this one and that one, they are all about 1910, Edwardian.

You have other ones here, I mean I think that ones probably 1920, this is the 1950s and that is the 1950s as well.

So a lady would go out for her evenings, her evening dinner and she was on show, everyone would be looking, this would go on her finger.

That is a thing of beauty. Very rare, you have got the jewelled thumb press there with sapphires and you have the sapphires there and I love these, the lipsticks are in the tassel. This was about the Jazz Age, modernism, and Hollywood and they’re fantastic.

We have to tot the values of these up. It is quite difficult but I know that would be £800 or £900… This one would be £700 and so would this one. This would be another £900, just a beautiful little duo. We’re talking, on the table here, £5,000.”

Shocked, the guest exclaimed: “Oh my god… oh right. I have three daughters speeding towards the house now.”

Warning the guest, Archer-Morgan joked: “Make sure they don’t see this when it’s recorded. It has been a delight looking at these.

I would like more time to go through them and study them and enjoy them like you.”
