BBC Virdee star Staz Nair opened up on his intense role and teased what could be coming in a potential second series.
Nair, 34, fronted the thriller which aired earlier this year, and spoke exclusively to GB News at the National Film Awards ahead of his big win for his role in the show.
When asked about the strong reaction to the show and whether he had anticipated it, the actor told this publication: “No, you never expect it, and you never should.
“I mean, just to be a working actor is a privilege. You know, just to be paying my bills by doing what I love is unheard of.
“You know, there are so many people I know who are so talented and don’t get a look in.
“So I was just grateful to be given a prime time show on the BBC, being the character is enough for me, but to have the reaction is just wonderful, and to see the Asian community liked it so much, to see the critics like it so much.”
The detective Harry Virdee star went on to tease how there is talk of a new series, adding: “So we’re waiting to find out the pretty in the near future of our season two.
“We couldn’t have done about the cast, without the wonderful directors, it was really just a team effort.”
When probed about what could be next for Harry, he answered: “For season two? I hope I’m not so stressed!
“I hope Harry gets a bit of, a bit of, a bit of a moment, but probably not.
“Actually, that’s a lie. I think… I think most actors like a challenge. I think a challenge allows you to define who you are, redefine who you are, learn something about yourself.
“We’re not here to stagnate. We’re here to push ourselves as people, not just as actors, challenge ourselves, and I hope I get as much of a challenge as I got from the first season.
“And yeah, the cast. The cast is so lovely. I really made some friends for life in that so just seeing them all again would be fantastic – it’s just such a great show.”
Despite the series’ success, the leading man went on to admit the role had been tough.
“I think it’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever experienced, if I’m completely honest,” the Game of Thrones star shared.
“You know, trying to honor a subculture like Bradford under the Asian community, take on a role that is so rooted in not just culture, but a lot of dynamics, racial dynamics.
“It was, you know, it was a tough world to swallow in terms of, ‘how do I put that all together and still honor my, my version of how I want to tell this?’
“You know, scary, if I’m completely honest. But with the love and, I think the approval of Amit Dhand, our writer, a cast that were always willing to go above and beyond for the show, it became easier and easier.
