Viewers of the latest Gardeners’ World episode witnessed an emotional moment when guest contributor Steve disclosed his recent terminal cancer diagnosis.
The Cambridge-based inventor told audiences his prognosis remained uncertain, with doctors suggesting he could have anywhere from two months to two years remaining.
Despite the devastating news, Steve maintains a remarkably positive perspective.
“I didn’t feel down as a result of it, I just saw it as another challenge, I’m going to have to sort something out for this,” he explained during the programme.
His appearance focused on a windmill restoration project he has undertaken over the past quarter-century.
Steve views completing this ambitious undertaking as part of his enduring legacy, particularly for his wife Pippa and their son.
The programme sparked an outpouring of emotion across social media platforms, with fans praising Steve’s resilience and determination.
“Oh no, that’s so sad to hear. Steve’s such a legend on Gardener’s World,” wrote one supporter on social media, whilst another expressed hope that he might overcome the illness.
Viewers particularly admired his philosophical approach to the diagnosis. One fan described him as “an inspiration,” whilst another praised the “wonderful couple” and Steve’s “positive mindset.”
Several comments highlighted the poignancy of his windmill project.
“Typical Cancer comes along for the bloke who still wants to finish the Windmill. Let’s hope he can do it and beats the disease as he dearly loves his wife,” one viewer posted on X.
The segment left many deeply affected, with some describing it as taking “a sad and rather dark turn.”
Steve revealed that his diagnosis has sparked “a big, creative burst” as he works to ensure the windmill project can be completed.
He explained that he’s developing plans for Pippa and their son to manage the restoration process after his passing.
“I am finding ways in which Pippa and our son, between them, will be able to manage this whole process once I’ve gone,” he told viewers.
The windmill has become a distinctive feature of their cottage-style garden in Cambridge. One viewer suggested nicknaming Steve “Mr. Toad” for his determined attitude, commenting on the programme’s unique garden feature.
Fans were particularly moved by Steve’s dedication to leaving something meaningful behind, with many noting how the project reflects his love for his family.
Meanwhile, the programme’s main presenter Monty Don recently addressed speculation about his own future with Gardeners’ World. The 69-year-old, who has fronted the BBC series since 2003, confirmed he has committed to at least two more years.
