Jonathan Ross sets record straight after facing criticism for BBC Celebrity Traitors remarks: ‘Misleading reports!’

Jonathan Ross has been forced to clarify previous comments after many responded to claims he “didn’t enjoy” being on The Celebrity Traitors.

The comedian, 64, set the record straight with a social media clarification on Tuesday evening.

Mr Ross was selected as a Traitor on the BBC favourite after the first celebrity edition of the show debuted last week.

The presenter was keen to take on the villainous role, but has since expressed some regrets about the decision.

He wrote on X last night: “Despite rather misleading reports, I am NOT discouraging anyone from taking part in future series of Traitors.

I am pleased I did it – an extraordinary experience- but I did not enjoy the duplicity as the game progressed.

It’s a tougher psychological challenge than I expected is all.

But I would never try to talk anyone out of it – just trying to give them a sense of what to expect.”

Mr Ross joined fellow celebs Alan Carr and Cat Burns in becoming a cloak-laden traitor, with their first “victim” being singer Paloma Faith.

The confusion surrounding Mr Ross’ thoughts prior to filming the show came from remarks he made on his podcast about not enjoying the experience.

Speaking on Reel Talk, he reflected: “I know they’re already planning a second celebrity version.

“I know because I’ve had two celebrity friends of mine call me and say, ‘I’ve been approached — is it good to do, is it bad to do?’

So I’m giving them the benefit of my experience, which was I didn’t enjoy it.”

He continued: “I’m a Traitor, that’s why. I found the lying really wearing, it left me feeling increasingly uncomfortable.

“We were lying all the time, because you’re sharing a car with people in the morning, and even though we’re not supposed to be talking about the game but obviously some people do, so you’re lying then.

“So you’re guarding this secret that you have and others know that someone has. You’re on the defence the whole time and you have to look people in the eye and lie.”

Responding to his clarification post, fans continued to express confusion over Mr Ross’ comments.

One asked: “Jon, did you not look up the word ‘traitor’ before signing up to do it?!”

Responding, Mr Ross wrote back: “Obviously I understood the assignment. But the immersive nature and other factors make you feel it more keenly.”
