Grantchester star breaks silence as ITV confirms ending to ‘beautiful’ period drama after 11 years: ‘My heart is heavy’

Period drama Grantchester will be wrapping up for good after the upcoming 11th series, ITV has confirmed.

The long-running show starring Robson Green has been a staple on the channel since 2014, but the next set of episodes will be the last.

The detective drama has featured the likes of James Norton, Tom Brittney and currently Rishi Nair in the lead role of the village vicar who joins forces with detective inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) to solve cases in the area.

The upcoming final series will see Green and Nair back in the Cambridgeshire village as the inspector and vicar Alphy Kotteram to crack a few more cases before the programme comes to an end.

Green, 60, shared a lengthy post on social media following the announcement of the series conclusion.

Alongside a snap of the current cast and a script for episode one of season 11, the actor wrote on Instagram: “You know what they say…. all good things must come to an end.

“Being part of the final series of Grantchester has been one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life.

“From the very beginning, I have had the incredible fortune to be part of this extraordinary team — a group of talented, passionate, and dedicated individuals who have become more than colleagues; they have become family.”

The veteran actor continued: “As we step into the 11th and final series, my heart is heavy with emotion but also filled with immense gratitude.

“It’s a bittersweet moment, knowing that we are bringing this beautiful journey to a close.

“Yet, amid the sadness, there is an overwhelming sense of happiness — happiness for the memories we’ve created, the stories we’ve told, and the friendships that have blossomed along the way.

“What has made this experience truly special is the genuine camaraderie and the shared joy of working together.

“The skill on display, the dedication to storytelling, and the warmth that radiates from everyone involved have made each day on set a joy.

“This show has become more than just a project; it has become a family — a loving, supportive community that I will cherish forever.”

Touching on the farewells to be made, he went on: “I won’t say goodbye because, for me it will remain a beautiful lifelong connection.

“I have made friendships forged through shared laughter, challenges, and triumphs

“The bonds we’ve formed extend far beyond the camera lens, and I am confident that they will endure long after the final scene within the Grantchester world has been filmed.

“Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey. It has been an honor to share in the magic of Grantchester, and I am forever grateful for the memories, the friendships, and the love that this show has given me.

“Here’s to the beautiful, loving family we’ve become — with all my heart, I carry you with me into whatever comes next.”

Taking to the comments, fans of the show expressed their sadness over the news, with many pleading for future episodes.
