Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie has expressed deep unease about the current state of America, declaring she no longer recognises her homeland despite her affection for it.
The 50-year-old performer paused thoughtfully when questioned about her fears as both an artist and an American citizen.
“I have to say that I love my country and I don’t, at this time, recognise my country,” Ms Jolie stated.
Speaking at Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival on Sunday, whilst promoting her new film Couture, the actress emphasised her international perspective.
“I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international. My life, my world view, is equal [and] united,” she continued.
“Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms [for anyone] I think is very dangerous.” She concluded gravely: “These are very, very heavy times.”
The actress’s remarks emerged just days following ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night programme indefinitely after the presenter’s controversial statements regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Mr Kimmel had accused the “MAGA gang” of attempting to “score political points” in their response to Kirk’s fatal shooting.
During the press conference, Ms Jolie acknowledged the gravity of current circumstances, noting: “I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I’ll be careful in a press conference.”
The Hollywood star’s appearance marked her inaugural visit to the Spanish festival, where she joined other prominent figures, including Colin Farrell and Jennifer Lawrence, who is set to receive the prestigious Donostia Award on September 26.
Reports have emerged suggesting the actress is actively exploring options to leave the United States, with sources indicating she has been examining various international destinations whilst preparing to put her Los Angeles property on the market.
According to insiders, Ms Jolie has long harboured reluctance about residing in Los Angeles permanently, but custody arrangements with former spouse Brad Pitt had restricted her movements.
The couple finalised their divorce proceedings last December. Sources close to the situation revealed: “She plans to relocate as soon as Knox and Viv turn 18 next year.
“She’s eyeing several locations abroad. She’ll be very happy when she’s able to leave Los Angeles.”
The twins’ upcoming milestone birthday would remove the final legal obstacle preventing her departure from California.
The actress became visibly emotional when discussing parallels between her character in Couture and her own experiences with cancer prevention.
Ms Jolie underwent preventive double mastectomy surgery approximately 10 years ago and subsequently had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation.
“I lost my mother and grandmother very young, so I chose to have a double mastectomy about a decade ago,” she revealed, adding: “I don’t regret it.”

Fighting back tears, she reflected on her late mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, whose necklace and ashes she wore during filming.
“I wish she was able to speak more as openly as I have been, and have people respond as graciously as you have, and not feel as alone,” Ms Jolie said.
She concluded emotionally that her mother “would have told Maxine to live every day and focus on life.”
